OK, so apparently my need to post more didn't last very long since I haven't posted anything in almost exactly one year. I do still check the Friends page, though.

So. Got married in September and went on a honeymoon to San Francisco, Yosemite National Park, and Napa Valley. Our original plan to wander the chateaus of southern France didn't pan out. Neither did Belize and/or Costa Rica. Those have been put off until we're not spending a ridiculous amount of money on a wedding. Thus, Plan C.

I came back here to LJ to post links to my honeymoon photos so I'd have them all in one place. So here they are:

Yes, I'm still here. And yes, I even read my Friends Page almost regularly.

It's been an incredibly busy, stressful, amazing last, um, nine months or so, what with the... no, there is too much, let me sum up:

fell in love, bought a house

(hey - it's almost like one of those "stories in six words" memes!)

It's still crazy around here, especially now that the legislative session has started up again. I am feeling the need to get back to LJ, though, as there's only so much that can be said on Facebook.

Sarah Palin is quitting as Governor of Alaska and is blaming the media for it. Apparently it's the media's fault she can't handle being the butt of the occasional joke and has to wail and scream like a two-year-old to make them stop. Can't stand the heat? Get out of the kitchen!

I got sunburned.

I also had a terrible spot to watch/shoot the parade this year, stuck behind a giant pram (for twins) and standing in the sun on the wrong side of the street. Thus the sunburn. Oh, well.

I thought the parade started at 1:00 and hurried to get there by 12:45, but it turned out the parade started at 2:00. Oh, well. Gave me an excuse to wander around a bit and find an Italian ice stand.

Had a good time anyway. Ran into baldsug and missy_carter at the smaller music stage and spent some time watching very small children dancing in the open, sunny space in front of the stage. The adults were smart enough to sit in the shade.

And my brain is still a little fried. Today, I'm heading up to Jim's bookstore in Woodstock since I have the day off for Confederate Memorial Day. Seriously.

I know you've been dying to know the roster for my auction fantasy baseball league. The Dying Quails are celebrating their 11th season, but only have one pennant to show for it (plus a third-place finish). Will this be the year?

We had to do the auction online again this year, but it went much more smoothly than last year. We also added three teams for a total of 14, our largest group ever. That really didn't seem to change things much in the middle, but the highest salaries were insanely high and the endgame picks were really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Tomorrow is Peanut Butter and Jelly Day at the Capitol!

This year's event is salmonella-free!

It runs from 8:00 - 1:00, so come down by around 11:00 if'n you want some grilled peanut butter sandwiches. Or even regular PB&J's made by Kroger/Publix/whoever is making them this year. There will also be little jugs of milk and lots of other peanuts: boiled, roasted, honey-roasted, spicy-roasted, etc.

Is anybody else tired of all the inauguration coverage yet?

It's all Obama all the time pretty much everywhere, and I'm over it. Look, I voted for him, too. I'm glad he won and will be President. But the guy's not a Messiah. Or a Prophet. He's just a guy, no matter how much he wraps himself in the mantle of Lincoln and MLK.

I'm more than a little worried that it's all gone to his head. He seemed like a cool customer during the campaign, someone who could keep his head out of the clouds with all the hoo-ha spinning around him. Now I'm not so sure.

There's no way in hell Obama can live up to the expectations piled on him. Not a chance. I wish he could, I really do. This country -- the world -- needs a leader who can rise to the occasion and get us out of this mess. Even if Obama is one who could do it, there's no one else around to help. FDR had Churchill. Lincoln had his generals and Douglass. Washington had Jefferson and Madison and Franklin and Hamilton and ....

So. Yeah. I'll try and watch the inauguration tomorrow while I'm at work. I have a place to crash in DC, but that can't happen. I even have a party in Decatur I could go to, but that ain't hap'nin' either.

I plan on withholding judgment on the Awesomeness of President Obama until after he's out of office, or at least until after he's actually, you know, done something. But wouldn't it be great if he actually pulls this off? Hope indeed.

Spaces are important in writing. They don't look like much; in fact, they don't look like anything at all. They are, however, necessary to prevent words from colliding and destroying the very sentence those words create.

Here are two examples from one press release from ACORN, responding to a resolution introduced in the Georgia General Assembly by Sen Jeff Mullis:
ACORN is proud of our work to help low and moderate-income citizens become apart of the electoral process.
and my favorite:
ACORN has a zero policy for employees deliberately falsifying registrations, and in the cases where our internal quality control procedures identifies this is happening, the person is fired and turned into elections and law enforcement officials.*
If I were Senator Mullis, I'd be more worried about ACORN's transmogrifier gun than their voter registration drives.


* This one has a bonus space problem: sometimes, spaces should be filled with words. See if you can spot which word is missing and where! (There's also a subject-verb agreement problem, but that's not very interesting.)

Bettie died of a heart attack yesterday after a bout of pneumonia. She was 82.

Time has a great obit for her, comparing her in some ways to Greta Garbo. It never refers to her as "Page," always as "Bettie."

They also have a link to this picture of her at age 80, posing with Hugh Hefner. Bettie almost never allowed her picture to be taken once she finished modeling. Of course, that doesn't include all the however many mug shots taken over the years.

Dearborn police used a universal key to free the woman.

Sgt. Ray Patrick calls the situation "more of an intimate relationship than an unlawful imprisonment."
